Placard

About

Twenty-five cards, ten poker hands

Placard is a card puzzle you can finish in a few minutes. The cards come one at a time, and you place each one on a 5×5 grid. When the grid is full, every row and column scores as a poker hand. There’s a new deal every day, the same for everyone.

How to play

  1. Place each card. You’re dealt 25 cards, one at a time. Tap a square to place each one. You never see what’s coming next.

  2. No moving cards. Once a card is down, it stays there.

  3. Make poker hands. Every full row and column scores as a poker hand. Diagonals don’t count.

A finished game: ten hands, 160 points. Rows score down the right, columns along the bottom.

The Daily and Practice

The Daily is one deal a day, the same 25 cards for everyone. You get one try, so every placement counts. A new Daily arrives at midnight, your time.

Practice is as many deals as you like, at your own pace: a place to learn the game, or to keep playing after the Daily.

Sharing

When you finish the Daily, Share sends your score and a picture of your board that gives none of the cards away. Each square takes the color of the best hand running through it: blue for pairs and trips, red for a straight up to a full house, yellow for four of a kind and up.

In Practice, Challenge sends a link to your exact deal. Your friend plays the same 25 cards, then sees how your board compares.

Where it comes from

Placard is Poker Squares, also called Poker Solitaire or Poker Patience: a solitaire for an ordinary deck of cards. It’s in Albert Morehead and Geoffrey Mott-Smith’s The Complete Book of Solitaire and Patience Games (1949). The game has two traditional ways of scoring, and Placard uses the American one, which ranks the hands as poker does. By Morehead and Mott-Smith’s reckoning, 200 points is a win.

What Placard adds is the Daily: the same deal for everyone, so a game you play alone becomes one you can compare.

Questions
